My Abuela’s Earrings
I do not know If you have read this before, but I’m in the mood to share the story of this earrings once again before February ends. February 21st, 2019 marked my maternal grandmother's 99th birthday, and I feel there is no better way to celebrate the memory of someone you loved, that remembering how that love shaped you, even if it is after they are gone.
The earrings that saved me.
Back in 2013, I was the mom of a toddler and a preschooler. I had been an immigrant and ex-corporate women for almost two years. I was a stay-home-mom with everything to succeed, but I was failing tremendously at it. Every day at 5 pm I felt like the walls of my home started to close to me like a prison. At the end of every day, I felt miserable and trapped. I was full of negative feelings, regrets, and complaints that were hurting my ability to be a loving mother and a good partner.
“I needed urgently to change my course… but I felt powerless.”
One day organizing my closet, I found a pair of earrings that belonged to my Abuela Olga. They were a beautiful pair of green tortoise hoops. When I picked them up in my hands, I immediately remembered what she always said: “You should never leave home without earrings or lipstick.” That day I decided to follow the advice and wear the earrings. A lot of people had something sweet to say about them, and that felt good. The next day, I wore the same hoops with a pair of cute shoes, and I felt incredible once again. The third day I wore the earrings, the shoes, and a dress and went out to sign up for an English conversation class.
I still remember vividly the awakening moment that started with that pair of earrings and my Abuela’s advice. Little by little I began to feel good about my day, and with that came the power and vision to make changes in my life that would direct me out of the grey world I was living and into the path of my purpose: to design jewelry to make moms look and feel their best. To this day I am sure that my Abuela sent me that pair of earrings at the moment that I was in most need.
To honor that vital moment in my life and the spark of empowerment that it created, I designed two pair of earrings with colorful tortoise and texturized metal. An elegant mix that can be worn together or separated depending on the agenda, but that would make any mom feel extra special. And to add extra joy to the celebration, until the end of this month anyone can get these unique designs for $99, the age my Abuela would had turned this month.
Happy birthday on heaven Abuela!
